My view

In this post, I would like to express my own view on this topic.

Social media is everywhere, is powerful, and is still growing.

I do think that social media is making us more social in some aspects. When we use it the right way and with people that are close to us. It can deepen long-distance relationships, strengthen friendships by being in contact any time we want and it can broaden our perspective of the World.

But what I do feel much more is that social media is killing relationships and replacing experiences. It creates a fake world. We are losing the ability of social interaction in our daily lives. We are a nation of people that no longer speak to each other and who have isolated ourselves to only follow channels that tell us we are right and therefore make us think that what we say is always true and doubtless.

We have created a world in which online connection has become primary, especially for younger generations. And yet, in that world, any time two people connect they are being sneaked upon by a virtual third person who's paying to manipulate those two people. Of course, we all use Facebook and Google, I do not want to do them any harm I just want to make them better - reform them - so they don't ruin our world.

The way that technology works is not set in stone. The way we use the internet is our own choice and this means we can change it! It does not have to do any more harm. We can make our lives better by doing some small steps and I would like to list some of my ideas here.

Let's try to have conversations about the internet and technology and what are they causing us. Voicing our opinion can make something happen. We can try to uninstall the apps that waste our time, for example, the news apps, social media apps, and accounts. I doubt we want to hear notifications and vibrations that aren't timely and important for us right now, so why do not turn them off. This goes hand in hand with leaving our phones out of the bedroom every night at a fixed time. Also, we should not use platforms or anything that stores our search history. Everything is being recorded and remembered. It is important to always choose. For example on Youtube, never accept a video that is recommended, always pick yourself.

The last thing I want to say is: We have to make sure we have all sorts of different information in our life. Read and talk with people we disagree with because we need to be exposed to different points of view. We should reduce our screen time and enjoy every moment we have been given. We ought to spend time with people that fill us up with energy.

So let's make Our World even better.

  1. I agree with you a lot, Rosa! All you wrote about has worried me for a couple years now, and your advice on how to reduce the harm is helpful. However, I have already tried turning off notifications in SM, thinking that people can call me or use messengers for contacting me, if necessary. Unfortunately, it lead me to way too many missed (important!) texts, because even work-related chats may be proceeded in instagram; it also sounded like nonsense to people, when I told them that I turned off notifications so that they did not disturb me. Anyways, it was a happy time, too be honest :))

  2. Dear Roza,
I find it great that you mentioned and explained one of the most prevalent issues among younger people in today's day and age. Unfortunately, I think that many of us fall in this category of people that spend most of their time hidden behind a screen. What surprised me is that this blog isn't the generic "oh we need to get off our phones" type of blog, but actually you want to reform the social media platforms. I think that is the best approach there is to this issue.
